State Representative Maurice West Receives Hero Award from Thresholds for Advocacy on Housing is Recovery Act

State Representative Maurice West was honored to receive the Hero Award from Thresholds at their annual celebration. The award recognized his pivotal role in expanding the Housing is Recovery Act, a key program designed to provide affordable housing to young people experiencing homelessness who also face serious mental health or substance use challenges.

One of the standout accomplishments in this expansion was lowering the age eligibility for the program from 21 to 18. By making this change, more vulnerable youth can now access the housing and mental health support they desperately need, offering them a lifeline at a critical point in their lives.

Representative West expressed his gratitude for the recognition and emphasized the importance of this work. “Ensuring that our young people have access to both safe housing and the services they need is a priority,” he stated. “Thresholds has been a tremendous partner in making sure that we leave no one behind.”

The Hero Award is a testament to Representative West's commitment to advocating for policies that protect and uplift Illinois' most vulnerable residents. His partnership with Thresholds has made a lasting impact on the lives of many young people, offering them the stability and resources they need to recover and build better futures.
