For State Representative Maurice West, investing in the future of young people has always been at the center of his work. Recently, that commitment was brought to life through an extraordinary community effort focused on expanding access to books and literacy resources across Rockford.
Through this initiative, Representative West’s office alone collected well over 1,000 books, contributing to thousands more gathered throughout the community. The outpouring of support reflects a shared understanding that literacy is foundational—not only to education, but to opportunity, confidence, and long-term success.
To ensure these donations have a meaningful and lasting impact, the books will serve the community in two important ways. United Way Rock River Valley will host a free Community Book Fair at its Rockford office (612 N. Main St., Suite 300) on Thursday, May 14 from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Parents, teachers, and childcare providers will have the opportunity to browse and take books at no cost, helping place valuable resources directly into homes, classrooms, and care centers.
Following the book fair, any remaining books will be bundled and distributed to elementary teachers within Rockford Public Schools. This ensures that every donation continues its journey—reaching students and supporting literacy efforts where they are needed most.
Representative West believes that when a community comes together with purpose, real change happens. This initiative is more than a book drive—it is a collective investment in the next generation, reinforcing the idea that every child deserves access to the tools they need to learn, grow, and thrive.
