State Representative Maurice West recently joined students and staff at Whitehead Elementary School for their Black History Month Extravaganza, a celebration dedicated to honoring Black history, culture, and the contributions of leaders who helped shape the community.
During the event, Representative West had the opportunity to speak with students about the importance of Black History Month and why understanding history plays such an important role in shaping the future. He also shared insights about his work in Springfield and the responsibilities that come with serving the people of Illinois in the state legislature.
Representative West emphasized the importance of civic engagement and leadership, encouraging students to see themselves as future leaders who can make a positive difference in their communities.
A highlight of the visit was sharing the story of Lewis Lemon, widely recognized as the founder of Rockford. Lemon, an early settler, played a significant role in the development of the city, and his story remains an important part of the region’s history. By sharing Lemon’s story, Representative West helped students connect their local community to the broader narrative of Black history.
Events like the Black History Month Extravaganza provide students with an opportunity to celebrate culture, learn about historical figures, and see examples of leadership within their own community. For Representative West, spending time with young people and encouraging their curiosity about history and civic service remains one of the most meaningful parts of public service.
Through conversations like these, he hopes to inspire students to learn from the past, take pride in their heritage, and imagine the many ways they can contribute to the future of their communities.
