News… From State Representative Maurice A. West II

January 9, 2019

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Maurice West II, D-Rockford, released the following statement Wednesday after being sworn in as the new state representative for the 67th District:

“It is an honor and a privilege to have the opportunity to represent the residents of Rockford and the people of Illinois.

“After years of gridlock, it’s time residents see positive results from Springfield that will move our state forward and address the serious challenges that face families throughout Rockford. It is my mission to bring the voice of our city’s residents to the Capitol every single day.

“When I walk door-to-door and speak with people throughout our community, I often hear the concern that too many are being left behind. Opportunity should not be for the wealthy and few, it should be available to each and every resident in Rockford. That is why I plan to push proposals aimed at improving our school system across the city, while focusing on efforts to attract business investments that will create and keep jobs here in our region.

“We need to increase the minimum wage, while looking at ways to roll back burdensome property taxes that are hurting working families. The crime in our community needs to be addressed, but we also need commonsense solutions to give those who have served time an opportunity to restart on a positive path.

“I am thankful for the impactful work my predecessor, Litesa Wallace, did on behalf of our community, and I look forward to working with Republicans, Democrats and every single resident in this district to address the challenges our state will face over the next two years.”
