West Files Bill to Opt Out of Legislator Pay Increase

News… From State Representative Maurice A. West II

July 22, 2019

ROCKFORD, Ill. – On July 19th, State Representative Maurice West (D-Rockford) filed HB3855 which allows Illinois legislators to opt out of receiving their pay increase and to transfer their pay increase to the Illinois State Pension Fund.

“After the type of government that we endured from 2015-2019 under the previous administration, it’s important for legislators to make up for lost time while we move forward for working families.”

In a letter that he mailed to all Illinois legislators, West stated, “As leaders of this great State, we should allow our residents to regroup and recover before we receive a pay increase. Timing is everything, and this is not the right time.”

West understands that the amount transferred to the ISPF does not solve the problem. “Though this amount is small in comparison to the overall pension liability it allows legislators to personally contribute towards reducing the amount for the sake of Illinois residents.”
